Loyal Michigan State University alums John and Becky Duffey have made a $10 million commitment, building on a legacy of philanthropy to the university. Their latest commitment reflects the Duffeys’ enduring gratitude for the experiences and relationships that have shaped their lives, as well as their desire to give back to a university that means so much to their family.
“Our alma mater is special to us, and we are honored to support at a level that will have lasting impact,” the Duffeys stated. “This commitment shows our belief that we have the right leaders in President Guskiewicz, our new AD, Dan, and Coach Fitz. Spartan Stadium isn’t just a place we spend Saturdays; it has provided the backdrop for so many of our family memories. To know we can play a role in its renovation and, at the same time, strengthen MSU Athletics, is important to us both.”
The gift, designated to FOR SPARTA, will be used in support of the Michigan State football program, including improvements at Spartan Stadium, an iconic gathering place for generations of Spartans, including the Duffey family.
“John and Becky care deeply about Michigan State and about the people who make this place special,” said MSU President Kevin M. Guskiewicz. “Their Spartan story began here more than four decades ago, and they’ve spent the years since giving back to a university that means so much to their family. Their generosity comes from the heart, and you can see that in the opportunities they’ve created for our students, faculty and student-athletes. I’m grateful for their friendship and their unwavering belief in Michigan State University.”
Both 1982 graduates, John earned his degree in accounting, while Becky graduated with a degree in medical technology. Their generosity to Michigan State spans decades, supporting improvements to football and basketball facilities, including the John and Becky Duffey Football Practice Field and the John and Becky Duffey Recruiting Lounge at Breslin Center, while also advancing academic excellence through an endowed professorship and the John and Becky Duffey Undergraduate Academic Services Suite in the Eli Broad College of Business. As dedicated volunteer leaders, they serve on the President’s Campaign Cabinet for Uncommon Will, Far Better World, the campaign for Michigan State, continuing to champion the university and inspire others to invest in its future.
The Duffeys’ commitment comes at an important time for Spartan Athletics as Michigan State continues investing in the people, facilities and experiences necessary to compete at the highest level.
“I can’t thank John and Becky enough for their family’s latest commitment to Michigan State Athletics. They represent the best of what it means to be Spartans,” said Vice President and Director of Athletics Dan Bartholomae. “This inspiring level of philanthropy showcases their belief in the direction we are headed as a department, while also inspiring others to dream about the possibilities of our shared vision.”
The commitment will support FOR SPARTA, a $1 billion initiative focused on elevating facilities, enhancing the student-athlete experience and strengthening opportunities across Michigan State Athletics, and is part of MSU’s $4 billion Uncommon Will, Far Better World campaign.
“John and Becky have been extraordinary partners to Michigan State, and their generosity tells a much bigger story than any single gift,” said Kim Tobin, Vice President for University Advancement. “They’ve invested in the people, programs and places that make MSU exceptional, and they’ve given their time and leadership to help bring others along. It’s especially meaningful that their latest commitment has helped carry our campaign beyond the $2 billion mark. That’s a powerful reflection of their belief in this university and the momentum we’re building together. We are incredibly grateful for all they continue to make possible.”
“Thank you to John and Becky for their unwavering support of MSU Athletics and our student-athletes. Their commitment continues the great momentum we have toward fully realizing the renovation and re-imagination of Spartan Stadium,” said Interim Spartan Athletic Foundation President Jacob Kirkham. “This level of investment in our football program serves as a catalyst for our success.”
