Meet Benjamin — a dedicated and globally minded senior from Accra, Ghana, whose journey at Michigan State University has been shaped by purpose, resilience and a commitment to advancing health equity. Majoring in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, with a minor in Pharmacology and Toxicology, Benjamin is a student in the College of Natural Science and the Honors College. He is honored to represent Michigan State University on this year’s Homecoming Court.
Benjamin’s experience at MSU reflects both academic excellence and a deep commitment to service. As an international student, he has found a strong sense of belonging within the Spartan community, a place that has challenged him to grow while supporting his ambitions. He was recognized with the Giving Back Award from the Honors College and was selected as one of four juniors to receive the Dan Bolin Undergraduate Scholarship from the College of Natural Science for his work. Through research, mentorship and community engagement, he has worked to bridge science with real-world impact, particularly in addressing disparities in healthcare.
His work and passions are rooted in advancing equity and access. From mentoring first-year students in research to supporting peers through academic tutoring, Benjamin is committed to helping others navigate opportunities in higher education. His research interests focus on addressing disparities in diseases such as triple-negative breast cancer, particularly among underserved populations, while also exploring the role of technology and innovation in improving patient care.
What stands out most to Benjamin about MSU is its people — a community defined by connection, pride and a shared commitment to making a difference. Whether through meaningful interactions at research presentations or the simple exchange of “Go Green” and “Go White,” he values the lasting sense of belonging that extends far beyond campus.
Looking ahead, Benjamin aspires to become a physician or physician-scientist, combining clinical care with research to improve health outcomes and build more equitable healthcare systems. He is also dedicated to global health initiatives and expanding access to education, resources and early detection tools through advocacy and community-based work.
As a Homecoming Court representative, Benjamin is excited to give back to the university that has shaped his journey while strengthening connections across the Spartan community. He hopes to inspire others to pursue their goals with confidence while fostering a culture of mentorship, service and shared success.
