Gregory and Thelma Knas loved music. They devoted their careers to it. And their children grew up to love it too.
The Knas Family Endowed Scholarship in Music Education was created by Ken, ’81, and Marla Knas, of Glenview, Illinois, to encourage and nurture aspiring music educators and to honor Ken’s parents.

Although Ken was not a music major, he was grateful to be part of the Spartan Marching Band and the College of Music. “My Spartan Marching Band experience was one of the prime highlights of my time at MSU,” he says.
The Knas Family Endowed Scholarship in Music Education supports students pursuing a music education degree. The scholarship places emphasis on qualities such as motivation, initiative and a drive to seek opportunities for personal and professional growth.
According to Associate Professor of Music Education Ryan Shaw, the inaugural recipients of the scholarship, Elaina Wizinsky and Breanne Turner, embody the scholarship’s mission and purpose.
“Breanne has shown grit and determination in her quest to be a school choir teacher,” he says. “Elaina is a hardworking horn player who has balanced a busy schedule as a music education student with performing in the Spartan Marching Band.”
To Elaina, the scholarship is an investment in her aspiration to become a band director who creates “an environment where students may express themselves, learn valuable teamwork skills and make beautiful music.”
Breanne had to leave school when caring for an ailing parent and returning was uncertain. To her, the scholarship has been “very helpful” as she has been pursuing her studies.
Ken recalls: “My parents taught and provided a love of music that has lasted throughout my life. We are so very excited to be involved with Elaina and Breanne, and subsequent future music educators. We applaud their commitment, efforts and sacrifices made.”
