Reach Out to Youth gives a dose of the medical field

The 11th annual Reach Out to Youth program brought young, curious minds to the Secchia Center in Grand Rapids earlier this year. Hosted by MSU’s College of Human Medicine, the program provided more than 80 children aged 7-11 a chance to explore careers in the medical field.

Medical students led hands-on activities like listening to a patient’s heartbeat, using electricity to activate muscles and stretching to maintain healthy muscles and improve flexibility.

“When I was a kid, I didn’t see someone that looked like me,” said second-year medical student Tyrese Lillard. “I didn’t see a Black doctor, Hispanic, Latino.  Now these kids can see it, they know they can be it, they believe they can be it.”
