ALUMNA LEADS LEGAL TEAM TO EXONERATE WRONGFULLY CONVICTED MAN

Mary Chartier, a 1992 graduate of the College of Arts and Letters as well as Communication Arts and Sciences, was the head of a legal defense team that recently won a retrial to exonerate Dennis Tomasik, a man wrongfully convicted on two wrongful counts of sexual misconduct in 2007.
The team presented 22 new witnesses on Mr. Tomasik’s behalf who were not presented at his first trial. These witnesses included co-workers and Mr. Tomasik’s supervisors, who testified that he was at work when these assaults allegedly happened. Timesheets corroborating the testimony were also admitted as evidence.
At the trial,Dennis Tomasik was vindicated when a Kent County jury came back with not guilty verdicts after deliberating for just 19 minutes.
