Thomas "Thom" Miller has joined the Braille Institute of America's (BIA) board of directors.

His commitment to the organization stems from his personal experience.

“I was largely raised from toddler to adulthood by an aunt who in her 20s lost her sight as a result of glaucoma. She played an important role in my life and the lives of my own daughter and son," Miller said.

"I have been interested for most of my life in services for the blind and those who are partially sighted. I’ve long admired the Braille Institute’s rich culture of commitment and dedication to the people it serves,” he added.

He has already begun to forge an alliance between BIA and Otis College, which offers a broad range of arts classes to thousands of people who are blind or visually impaired. It has five regional centers across Southern California.

"Thom Miller’s marketing expertise, creativity, and track record of civic dedication make him an outstanding addition to our board. I eagerly look forward to the new possibilities his appointment will bring," said Peter Mindnich, BIA president.

Miller majored in advertising, earning a bachelor's and a master's degree in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences in 1971 and 1976, respectively. He lives in California.
