ALUMNUS BUILDS WORLD RENOWNED ORTHOPEDIC SURGERY TOOL COMPANY

Reinhold Schmieding earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Natural Science, majoring in physiology, in 1977. After observing orthopedic surgeries, Schmieding became inspired to perfect new procedures and tools. He began sketching and designing tools during the evenings at his home, laying the foundation for his successful company. In 1981, he launched Arthrex. The company produces more than 7,500 tools for orthopedic surgeons and boasts more than $1 billion in annual revenue. Dedicated to his alma mater, Schmieding works to hire MSU Alumni and provide internships and advice to students. He was honored on the Forbes 400 list for his entrepreneurial success and distinction in his field.
