Alumna celebrates life of service on 100th birthday

On Oct 11, Edith Johnson Avise turns 100 years old.  She was a graduate of Michigan State College 1937 with a bachelor's degree with high honor majoring in home economics.  She returned for her Master's Degree in 1973 with a degree in human ecology.  She was an employee of the MSU extension service in the upper peninsula from 1939 -1947 as a county club agent for 3 years, and assistant state club leader for 5 years.  She was in charge of the girls' programs for the entire peninsula.  

In the 1950's, co-founded and was a charter member of "Home Economists in Homemaking" in Grand Rapids, and began many volunteer activities.  In the 1960's, she served two two-year terms on the MI State Home Economic Alumni Association Board and in the 1970's she served four years on the MSU Alumni Development Board, the only woman member. In 1972, she was given a MSU Distinguished Alumni award, one of the first six recipients. In 1975, she received an Appreciation Award from the MSU Alumni Association. After 25 years of retirement, she served as a volunteer for the Iron County Historical Museum.  She has been a lifelong supporter of the Michigan State alumni association and avid Spartan sports fan.  

In retirement she has been spending time in California with her son John who is distinguished professor at UC Irvine.
