The Red Cedar River is one of Michigan State University’s iconic touchstones. While it wasn’t always a showpiece, it is now. Alumnus Jim Bedford holds the evidence: a healthy, pan-worthy steelhead.

He’s been fishing the University's beloved body of water since he was a child. “It’s a really nice river,” he said.

“Lots of kids fished when I was a kid. It was a super-wholesome activity,” he added.

Last year, the Red Cedar River was seeded with rainbow trout, he said.

A three-degree graduate of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Bedford lives in East Lansing.

He earned his degrees in 1965, 1967 and 1970, majoring is fisheries and wildlife. After graduation, he applied his love of the outdoors working at both the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the Michigan Department of Health.

Every year he introduces new generations of young fisherfolk to the sport as a volunteer at Fishin’ Michigan, host of the Dr. Bill Early Youth Fishing Program.

Bedford is also the author of such fishing books as Flyfisher’s Guide to Michigan and Steelhead Savvy: A Master’s Guide to Help You Hook More Steelhead.
