MSU ALUMNA BEGINS PEACE CORPS SERVICE IN INDONESIA

Lisa Wright, 24, of Grand Rapids has been accepted into the Peace Corps and departed for Indonesia in mid-March to begin training as a secondary English education volunteer. Wright will teach basic to intermediate English and provide enrichment learning opportunities through extracurricular and non-formal community activities.
“My passion and goal in life is to positively impact someone's life every day, especially with youth,” Wright said. “In adversity, the best thing you can give is hope, that's what I want to give during my time in Peace Corps.”
Wright is a 2009 graduate of Byron Center High School. She graduated from Michigan State University in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in communications and public relations.
During the first three months of her service, Wright will live with a host family in Indonesia to learn the local language and integrate into the local culture. After acquiring the language and cultural skills that will help her make a lasting difference, Wright will be sworn into service and assigned to a community in the Indonesia where she will serve for two years.
Wright will work in cooperation with the local people and partner organizations on sustainable, community-based development projects that improve the lives of people in Indonesia and help Wright develop leadership, technical, and cross-cultural skills.
Wright joins the 233 Michigan residents currently serving in the Peace Corps. More than 7,107 Michigan residents have served as volunteers since the agency was created in 1961.
