MSU GRADUATE PENS BOOK OF TRAVEL TALES

William "Scott" Stone is a world traveler. He earned a bachelor's degree from the MSU College of Communication Arts and Sciences in the mid-1970s. Shortly after, he embarked on what became a global odyssey.
“It was the best decision of my life. It set the tone for my ardent passion for travel and a more open, relevant and colorful life,” said Scott, a New Yorker.
He now is recounting some of his favorite travel stories in his book, INSATIABLE: A Passion-for- Life Memoir, Backpacking Around the World.
It's aimed at modern backpackers looking to make global treks on a shoestring, armchair travelers and intrepid readers interested in other cultures and countries. He hopes it will inspire more Spartans to take their own potentially life-changing journeys.
“Since my first around-the-world travel, I have continued to travel the same way: with a backpack, moving slowly, seeking contact with locals and getting off the beaten path. With my upcoming travel to the Himalayas in May followed by Bangladesh, a place I’ve never been, I will have visited 81 countries.
“INSATIABLE is a memoir of the more than two years I spent backpacking around the world, straight out of MSU. It started in 1976 with my trans-Atlantic crossing on the QE2 luxury liner, a college graduation gift from my proud parents. It was to be a brief 10- day trip, focused on London and Paris. However, that was about to change.
“Once in London, the world opened up and I was filled with a profound sense of wonderment that all things were possible. I was consumed with an insatiable thirst and curiosity to explore and discover more of the world. This was the beginning of the best decision of my life—to travel as far and long as my $914 life savings would take me.
“I wanted a global odyssey. And by the time it was over, I had backpacked around the world, experiencing life in 34 countries—all on less than $2 a day. INSATIABLE features 35 stories from my travel journals. Tales from such cities as Paris, Munich and Istanbul; and such countries as Austria, Burma, Afghanistan and India.”
Next, he hopes to begin covering the best and most authentic ethnic restaurants in New York City. You can follow Stone on Facebook.
