MSU W.W.II VET HONORED IN ART WORK

Michigan State University artistic image

Deb Drew Brown of Williamston had always known that her father Jack Drew, '51,'54, had served in the U.S. Armed Forces. But he never really brought it up, she said. It was only after his death that she uncovered a trove of his WW II Army photos and related newspapers, tickets and poems.

"All the items he  saved are in near perfect condition," she said.

After the war, Jack became a well-known and award-winning architect in Lansing. He died in 1988.

Now, Deb is preserving her dad's war experiences in a collage that she has entered in this fall's ArtPrize exhibition and competition, based in Grand Rapids.

"My father lied about his age to enter the army; he said his 18th birthday was in March, when it was in May," Deb said. "He helped liberate several cities and towns from the Germans."

Visitors to the ArtPrize exhibition, Sept. 24-Oct. 12, may see this piece in the window of Oppenheimer & Co., 250 Pearl St., Grand Rapids, across from the Amway Grand Hotel.
