MSU ALUMNA NAMED RWANDAN AG MINISTER

Gerardine Mukeshimana, ' 03, ' 13, a plant researcher working at the Biosciences eastern and central Africa-International Livestock Research Institute (BecA-ILRI) Hub in Nairobi, Kenya, has been appointed Minister of Agriculture and Animal Resources in Rwanda.

The Michigan State University alumna has been working as a plant scientist at the BecA-ILRI Hub where her focus has been on using molecular virology, plant transformation, genomics and bioinformatics tools to develop strategies to control the spread of aphid-transmitted virus diseases in the common bean. She was also contributing significantly to capacity building and resource mobilization to better support African national agricultural research systems.

She earned her masters and doctoral degrees in plant breeding, genetics and biotechnology.
