Spartan Profiles: Rob Smith

ROB SMITH: MACY’S EVP
Macy’s has long been an iconic institution, with its Thanksgiving Parade, its red star logo, and its flagship store serving as the setting for the classic Christmas film, Miracle on 34th Street.
Helping Macy’s remain one of the nation’s premier department stores is the job of Rob Smith, ’87, Macy’s executive vice president for merchandising. “I oversee women’s, kid’s, apparel and juniors—altogether about $4 billion in sales a year,” Smith says. “It keeps me busy and thoroughly satisfied.”
A native of Grosse Pointe, he was accepted by both MSU and the University of Michigan. “I chose the better school,” he says. “I loved my education at MSU, and also being involved in many leadership opportunities. I couldn’t take on enough—the busier the better.”
Rob was involved in student government and served as president of MSU’s Interfraternity Council. He had two favorite professors—Sharon Grimes in marketing, and film professor Mike Doyle. “Doc Doyle had great passion for the arts,” he recalls. “I took several of his film courses. He was accessible and interesting.”
Yet another passion for Rob is the Hetrick-Martin Institute—and its Harvey Milk School—which provide services for lesbian, gay, bixexual and transgender students. “I was a closeted gay kid,” says Rob. “Today’s kids come out at such a young age, as early as 11 or 12, and that takes such courage. They do it whether they are accepted or not. We are working to create a safe place for these kids.” Rob serves as HMI co-chair and has singlehandedly raised $5 million for the organization.
